Casimir Energies for Spherically Symmetric Cavities
A general calculation of Casimir energies —in an arbitrary number of dimensions— for massless quantized fields in spherically symmetric cavities is carried out. All the most common situations, including scalar and spinor fields, the electromagnetic field, and various boundary conditions are treated with care. The final results are given as analytical (closed) expressions in terms of Barnes zeta...
متن کاملScalar Casimir effect for D-dimensional spherically symmetric Robin boundaries
The vacuum expectation values for the energy-momentum tensor of a massive scalar field with general curvature coupling and obeying Robin boundary condition on spherically symmetric boundaries in D-dimensional space are investigated. The expressions are derived for the regularized vacuum energy density, radial and azimuthal stress components (i) inside and outside a single spherical surface and ...
متن کاملElectromagnetic Field Quantization & Applications to the Casimir Effect
The quantization of the electromagnetic field is demonstrated through a two-pronged approach. The classical harmonic oscillator is discussed in depth, and then its quantization is further discussed. Additionally, the classical electromagnetic field Hamiltonian is derived and analogized to the classical harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian at several points. Quantization of the electromagnetic field ...
متن کاملThe Dirac equation in D-dimensional spherically symmetric spacetimes
We expound in detail a method frequently used to reduce the Dirac equation in D-dimensional (D ≥ 4) spherically symmetric spacetimes to a pair of coupled partial differential equations in two variables. As a simple application of these results we exactly calculate the quasinormal frequencies of the uncharged Dirac field propagating in the D-dimensional Nariai spacetime.
متن کاملThe Dimensional-Reduction Anomaly in Spherically Symmetric Spacetimes
In D-dimensional spacetimes which can be foliated by n-dimensional homogeneous subspaces, a quantum field can be decomposed in terms of modes on the subspaces, reducing the system to a collection of (D−n)-dimensional fields. This allows one to write bare D-dimensional field quantities like the Green function and the effective action as sums of their (D − n)-dimensional counterparts in the dimen...
